Images of dirty that are prioritized in the opening sequence are dirty and ragged things around the room along with the boy sleeping. These images were close-ups which were flashed onto the screen

The images carry a mysterious yet calm and gentle motherly connotation

Genre is reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset. In this case, drama is reinforced by symbols that are portrayed within the first couple of seconds. For example, the images of the dirty things symbolize the room which is considered to be their world as they are not allowed out.

The film establishes an enigma from the outset by using unfamiliar sounds, dim lighting, and flashes of unfamiliar images to create the feeling of suspense causing them to continue watching to learn more

The use of suspense and unfamiliar scenarios ensures that the viewers who are watching are constantly wondering what is happening next and having something to look out for. This targets viewers who love the rush of drama and suspense.

As stated previously, the beginning of the film contains images that were shot as close-ups to give the viewer a more intimate introduction. These images were flashed onto the screen using editing which conveyed a dramatic and mysterious feel
