Inspiration for our Genre
My group decided on action/ adventure for the genre of the film opening that we will soon produce. In this blog post, I will be discussing the general rundown of what our genre is, why our group agreed on this film genre and my personal opinion about our topic. I will also be including examples of movies that helped come to this choice.
Action/Adventure films are exciting stories, with new experiences or exotic locales. They are designed to provide an action-filled, energetic experience for the film viewer to live vicariously through the travels, conquests, explorations, creation of empires, struggles and situations that confront the main characters, actual historical figures or protagonists. The two genres separately are very different and each attracts the viewers to watch more. This had a huge impact on the reason we picked these genres. We first wanted to pick just one of these genres, but after tons of picking and prying, we decided that our best option was to combine them both as it would provide our opening film to appeal to a wider range of audience, along with a suspenseful storyline that kept both the thrill of action and exploration alive.
When we were deciding on a genre for the opening, I personally did not want to pick Action/adventure because I often don't watch/like movies that are apart of this genre. Although, conducting plenty of research and watching a few action/adventure movies have helped change my mind. A movie that helped change my mind was Jumanji. Jumanji is a fantasy adventure comedy film that consists of a group of teenagers who trapped themselves in the game Jumanji. Throughout the movie, viewers watch the set avatars complete quests set out for them. Along the quest, they face many obstacles that slow the process down, for example, Bethany being eaten by a hippopotamus. Once designated tasks are complete they are able to fulfill their quest to gain control of all the jungle’s animals, letting them lift the curse from the game. Another movie that helped change my mind was The Matrix. The Matrix is a story of the creation of artificial intelligence as a solution to the technological fall of mankind. These “robots” then imprisoned mankind in a virtual reality system Neo, Trinity, and, Morpheus is then sent on a plight to free humanity. In this process, the movies show a series of heavily choreographed action sequences and "bullet time" slow-motion effects, which played a huge part in the film action genre.
